In aikido practice, shizentai is our “natural body,” one of balanced uprightness which reveals our inherent capacity for unselfconscious responsiveness. Eihei Dogen speaks of zazen as “the dharma gate of ease and joy.” As in zazen, in shizentai we find action in accord with our true nature.

What are the physical and mental postures of shizentai and zazen?  How do they manifest in our activity?  These will be the themes of this year’s Aikido and Zen Seminar, during which we explore how these practices inform and penetrate each other as we sit in mediation, engage in Aikido keiko, work together, share meals and speak with each other.

Led by Tres Hofmeister Shihan and Seishin Laurie Nusbaum, the format includes morning and evening zazen, Aikido keiko, and taking part in community life at Crestone Mountain Zen Center. There is also space in the schedule for walks, hikes, visits to notable sites on the mountain, and naps! While some familiarity with aikido and with zen meditation (or any other form of meditation) is helpful, previous experience is not a requirement.

The seminar will begin Wednesday evening, September 23rd, and end after brunch on Sunday, September 27th.

Please join us for this weekend of practice and exploration.

Please note our cancellation policy.
